The AFPLS Outstanding Alumni Award was established in 2000 by Ross Nielsen, to honor and celebrate the contributions of Price Lab/NU High Alumni.  Awards are determined today by the AFPLS Board, and those chosen are honored at the AFPLS fall banquet.  Plaques for previous winners hang in the lobby of Butzier Auditorium at PLS.

Nominations for the AFPLS Outstanding Alumni Award are accepted throughout the year.  If you would like to nominate yourself or another PLS/NU alumni for this award, contact michelle.swanson@uni.edu

2000
John Martin (Class of 1966)
Bob Stephens (Class of 1963)
Mary Sue Coleman (Class of 1961)
Mary Sue Coleman attended MPLS from 1956 to 1961.Her activities at MPLS included science fairs and science clubs. During her acceptance speech, Coleman recognized Walter Gohman as her advisor at MPLS and as an inspiration to her life, even as a young junior high student. Mary Sue attended Grinnell College, University of North Carolina, and the University of Texas. From 1995 to 2002 she was the President of the University of Iowa; she is now the President of the University of Michigan. Just a few of her many accomplishments include: Provost at UNM, Vice Cancellor and Associate Provost at UNC, Cancer Center Administrator at University of Kentucky, Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science, Governors Strategic PLanning Council, Universities Research Association, and the Board of Trustees of Grinnell College. Mary Sue Coleman is an imspiration to all, and the board thanks her for her continued dedication, MPLS spirit, and determination. She and her husband, Kenneth, have one son, Jonathan, in Denver, Colorado.

Bob Stephens attended MPLS from 1951 to 1963. His activities at MPLS included tennis, track, swimming, and student council. During Bob's acceptance speech, he acknowledged his advisor, Mr. Scoval. Stephens attended the University of Northern Iowa and San Jose State University. His BA is in Liberal Arts and he holds a Master's degree in Industrial Psychology. He is the President and CEO of Adaptec, Inc. Some of his accomplishments includes: Senior VP at Western Digital, President and CEO of Emulex, Founder and CEO of California Network Systems and Power I/O. Bob and his wife, Carolyn, have two children, David and Stefanie.

John Martin attended MPLS from 1953-1966. His father, Roy, and his son, Brooks, also attended MPLS, making the Martin family a three-generation MPLS group. Some of John's activities at MPLS included basketball, track, and choir. He attended college at the University of Northern Iowa, and is the President of Martin Brothers Distributing in Cedar Falls. Some of Martin's accomplishments include: 1999 National Marketing award, sponsorship of numerous AAU basketball teams, 1998 Innovator of the year, numerous personal basketball awards, 1996 National Marketing Award, Premier Foods Board of Directors, and the ID Magazine Editorial Board.

Susan Rider (Class of 1985)
Bob Hellman (Class of 1978)

Susan Rider is a trumpet instructor and is a member of "The President's Own" Marine Band. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and Indiana University. She has studied trumpet with Edmund Cord, Charles Gorham, Randy Grabowski, and Keith Johnson. She has had chamber music coaching from Empire Brass, Atlantic Brass, Summit Brass, and Canadian Brass. She has been an instructor at Indiana University, Purdue University, and Ector County Indpendent Schools. She is the co-editor for the International Women's Brass Conference Newsletter and has performed with numerous groups including the New World Symphany, Robert Guilliaume, and The Moody Blues.

Hellman is currently a partner and CEO of McCown DeLeeuw & Co., a private equity firm in California. He attended Standford University, London School of Economics, and Harvard Business School. He is one of the founders of the Tokyo office of Bain & Co., has redesigned and chaired HBS Global Conferences, co-chaired the Stanford reunions process, and is involved in Cornerstone Family Services, the Brown Schools, Telespectrum Worldwide, TARP/e-Satisfy, Vintage Directions Wholesale, and Hellman Associates.

Jeff Williams (Class of 1980)
Trev Alberts (Class of 1989)
Williams attended the University of Colorado (Boulder) and graduated with a B.S. in accounting and finance. He was an accountant at Arthur Anderson and Controller at NBI Computers in Boulder. He began Vitarian Foods in 1987, distributing all natural dried fruits to stores in Colorado. He sold Vitarian Foods and began working in another start-up company, Bienergy Nutrients, as CFO and VP of Operations, and this company was sold to Whole Foods ten years later. Since then, Williams has built an assisted living facility and has started another direct marketing health products company called The Feel Good Catalog.

Trev Alberts attended the University of Nebraska and graduated with a B.A. in Communication Studies. He was drafted in the 1994 NFL Draft to play with the Indianaoplis Colts.  Since retiring from football, he has been a broadcaster with the sports department at CNN and is a college football analyst for ESPN.

Gary Kroeger (Class of 1975) Nancy Price (Class of 1942) Pamela Wenndt (Class of 1971)
For the past 21 years, Gary Kroeger has been an actor, host, producer, and writer in television and films, including a stint on Saturday Night Live. He recently moved back to Cedar Falls and is the Director of Media at the Mudd Group.

Nancy Price's published books include A Natural Death (1973), An Accomplished Woman (1979), Sleeping With the Enemy (1986), and No One Knows (2003). Her novels have been translated into fifteen languages and one became a major film. Price taught in UNI's Department of English Language and Literature, and her father, Malcolm Price, was president of the university from 1940 to 1950, and our school is named in his honor.

Pamela Wenndt attended Luther College where she double majored in biology and psychology. She earned a degree in physical therapy at the University of Iowa. She has worked in a variety of medical settings over the years, most recently in her own agency, Physical Therapy Partners. She and her business partner employ over a dozen medical professionals and provide physical, occupational, and speech services.

John Aldrich, Jr. atteded MPLS beginning in Nursery Kindergarten and graduated in 1972. He was active in track, swimming, tennis, baseball, and football. He participated in set crew and acted in one play. He was a member of the Letterman's Club. He was awarded the title of Mr. Iowa in 1978. He attended the University of Northern Iowa and is currently a teacher at East High School in Waterloo. He has taught for 17 years, most recently in a self-contained classroom for students with severe behavioral disorders. He also teaches Physical Education, Independent Living for Students with Special Needs, and is the East High Work Experience Coordinator and Driver's Education Instructor. He enjoys bow hunting for deer, and pheasant, duck, and goose hunting. Some of his favorite teachers at MPLS include: Max Hosier, Floyd Anderson, Ken Butzier, Ferd Riechmann, and his dad (John Aldrich, Sr.).

Annabeth Gish attended MPLS from Nursery Kindergarten to graduation in 1989. She was active in French, Quiz Bowl, Choir, Drama, Jazz Choir, Variety Shows, National Honor Society, Speech, Pep Club, Volleyball, and Track. Gish attended Duke University and graduated cum laude with a major in English and a minor in Women's Studies. She is currently an actress and has worked in over forty film and television productions, including Hero in the Family, Desert Bloom, Mystic Pizza, Shag, Wyatt Earp, Nixon, Beautiful Girls, and Double Jeopardy. Two of her most notable television shows are The West Wing and The X-Files. Her parents are Judy and Robert, she has two older siblings (Tim and Robin) and she is married to Wade Allen.

William Washington (Class of 1977)

William Washington attended PLS from 1971 to his senior year in 1977. He was involved in Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Jazz Band, Variety Shows, Yearbook, and Track. He majored in Computer Engineering at Iowa State University and earned an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. He is currently a computer consultant and contract programmer in Algonquin, IL. and is President of Nija Systems, Inc. He is married and has five children.

Jim Landau attended PLS from 1965 to 1975. He participated in Football and Letterman's Club. He attended UNI and has been very involved in the Cedar Valley including the UNI Athletic Club, Sartori Community Advisory Board, Lion's Club, and the Personnel Committee at his church to name a few. Jodi Landau attended PLS from 1965 to 1976. She was active in cheerleading, pep club, band, chorus, drama club, plays, swimming, soccer, and student council. She was the Homecoming Queen in 1975. She attended the University of Iowa. She has been actively involved in Junior League, Community Main Street Board, her church, and school committees. Together, the Landaus own and operate the Cedar Falls Brown Bottle and the Montage and have been generous business partners with PLS. They have three children.

Devin McKinney attended PLS from 1975 to 1985. He participated in drama, speech, Model UN, student council, chorus, and Madrigal Dinner. He attended UNI and City College of New York. McKinney wrote the book _Magic Circles: The Beatles in Dream and History_ published by Harvard University Press in 2003. He is married to Kathy Berenson and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Barbara Lounsberry, Class of 1965
Gavin Mauer, Class of 1971

Barbara Lounsberr attended PLS from 1953 through her senior year of 1965. She was involved in chorus, drama, speech, newspaper, yearbook, and tennis. She earned her BA and MA in English from UNI and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She taught in UNI's Department of English Language and Literature for 32 years and was awarded the Distinguished Scholar Award in 1994 and the Outstanding Teaching Award in 1998. She is the author or editor of seven books.

Gavin Maurer attended PLS from 1957-1971. He particpated in drama, band, and chorus. He earned many honors and awards for his performances with his French horn and singing. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned both a BA and MBA. He is currently the Vice President of Marketing and E-commerce for National Geographic Maps.
